I made a machine that consisted of two chassis, one containing the center block and one holding bombs. When the bombs detonated (destroying the latter chassis), the camera switched to a fixed position and would not refocus on the intact first chassis, even with the reset camera button.
This is on v0.02, Win7.

The game has no way of knowing which pieces of the machine you want to zoom to. When you blew up the machine, little pieces of it were no doubt flung all over the map, It is also possible for some pieces to sometimes fall through the floor and fall into the void.
The camera (and the "recenter camera" button tries to approximate the "center" of all your pieces. This becomes a problem in situations where half your machine is spread to all points of the compass by bombs.

True, but would it make sense if F1 would refocus on either the intact parts, the center block, or the starting position?

I think this is indeed a bug, the game should automatically focus on the starting block, but after large explosions it doesn't.
I will pass this on to the devs.
