if you make a machine that's reasonably big, there's a point where it goes from 60 fps to about 6, but it's fine when editing the machine... i take it this is known but I'm curious as to what is causing it.

These perfomance issues are most likely caused by the physics engine only using one core, even if you have more than one. That's also why it's fine when editing the machine, there aren't really any physics calculations to do in the editor. With the next version of the engine (Unity 5) this is supposed to improve a lot though, until then just slow down time when it starts to lag, that helps as well.

People keep saying that it's gonna get better when all cores are used, but on my pc 72,8-79,0% of my 4 cores are used... If it's not using multiple cores and I'm not running anything other then Besiege (except a browser and Winamp) why wouldn't all my cores be in use all the time? Does anybody have an explanation of that?

That's kind of weird. Is it really using all of them at the same time or possibly just frquently switching cores ? I've seen that happen.

Oh the latter could be the case. I got one of those monitor pieces of software that keeps track of the peaks. I don't get a nice graph where I can see that all cores were used at once, I can just see that all cores were used for 72-80% at one time...
I'm guessing it's prob just switching.
