Wheel control depends on the way it is build.. that is wrong in my understanding. It shall be always identical with default binding (press ↑ to move forward, press ↓ for reverse). - at this build orientation everything is OK
↑ results to forward move ↓ results to reverse move
- at this build orientation keys are SCREWED
↑ results to rotation counterclockwise ↓ results to rotation clockwise
Correct behavior: let the "car" go straight left/right depends on ↑/↓ pressed

Aim at the wheel and press F. Up and Down are now reversed. Also works with steering mechanisms and spinning sawblades for instance.

I think it pretty confusing as there are completely no difference in design, just object's orientation in space. It would help to have it as an option, smth like "absolute/relative controls" same issue here

I think the problem with this is: How is the game supposed to know which way you intend to be forward ? Based on your second screenshot for example, it may be towards the bottom of the screen just as well as towards the top.
Now, I agree that if you actually use the rotate tool to rotate your machine to a specific orientation, the game should handle placing wheels better, getting their direction right automatically. But if you just build into a different direction, there is not much the game can do on its own really.

..How is the game supposed to know which way you intend to be forward? the same way it is done now for building a car in a "traditional angle" for some reason only red highlighted wheels operates "wrong" binding is default for all wheels (FORWARD - up / REVERSE - down)..But if you just build into a different direction, there is not much the game can do on its own really I think there should not been such thing as "different direction" that results in such behavior. just imaging a car that is turned 90° -- it is still the same car and forward is forward for the car itself and it shall operates in the same way unless you change it. ps: not sure if such "default limited build behavior" is intended and "correct one any way build" can result in some other mistakes in other situations.. but it shall be the same game with only 90° angle rotation.
