Interesting thing about pad as a controller - i personally don't understand why pads exist - but personal likes/disikes aside i assume it should be valid option for keybind.
Did you try it ? And if so to what result ?
Camera actually follows core block by default (at least if you didn't change focus)
Some kind of sandbox with floor only which may ease your waiting for actual one is first level of ipsilon - the cottage is really small - and you can turn on free build mode.
